What we do
Putting the wrong fuel in your car is more common than you might think. Around 150,000 drivers in the UK do it every year. The good news is that if you catch it quickly and do not start the engine, the damage is usually minimal and we can fix it at the roadside.
Do not start the engine if you have put the wrong fuel in.
If you are still at the forecourt, leave the engine off and the car in neutral. If you have already started driving, pull over safely and switch off as soon as you can. The less the wrong fuel circulates, the easier and cheaper the fix.
Your Recovery Hero will drain the contaminated fuel from the tank, flush the fuel lines and pump, dispose of the bad fuel safely, and then refuel with the correct fuel. In most cases, you will be able to drive away within an hour without needing a tow to a garage.
Common wrong fuel problems we fix
Petrol in a diesel (most common)
The petrol nozzle fits easily into a diesel filler. This is by far the most common wrong fuel mistake in the UK.
Diesel in a petrol
Less common because the diesel nozzle is larger, but it does happen. Diesel can clog your spark plugs and catalytic converter.
Started the engine with wrong fuel
If you have already started the engine, do not panic. Turn it off as soon as possible and call us. We can still help.
Contaminated fuel
Sometimes the fuel station itself has a contamination issue. If your car starts running rough after filling up, call us.
Run out of fuel
Not technically wrong fuel, but we can bring fuel to you at the roadside so you do not need a tow to the nearest station.
